OUR STORY
On this page, we introduce ourselves, explain the inspiration behind Orita Chaten, and our deep appreciation for Japanese culture.
Hi, We are Orita Chaten, an online Japanese food store delivering products directly from Japan.
Living in Japan, seeing so many foreign people coming from all over the world, I always have this feeling that I just want to communicate with them and guide them to the best of Japan. I want to show them around what we really love. The food, the culture and everything.
Through this Orita Chaten project, we will introduce the food we love, the manga we read, the music we listen to, and everything we love about Japan. We also want to share scenes of our daily life in Tokyo and our thoughts on Japan.
What does "Orita Chaten" mean?
"Orita" is our family name, and "Chaten" means "tea shop" in Japanese. Even though “Chaten” sounds a little classic and authentic, we want to make it more casual and accessible like how it is in cafe culture all around the world now. Starting with this online shop, We are planning to open a real “Chaten” in the near future, welcoming people from all over the world.
What type of people are we?
I suppose we are very creative people. Besides our love for Japanese food, we love art! We paint, we play music, make videos… anything creative. We listen to music from the 60s and 70s a lot. We're also very into Japanese city pop, especially Eiichi Ohtaki. And most importantly we love films by Yasujirō Ozu. We skateboard a lot and started collecting ceramics by Japanese potters.
When it comes to food, we try to eat healthily and enjoy exploring different seasonings. We love food from around the world and aim to make authentic Japanese dishes taste universally delicious. And, of course, we can’t forget Japanese snacks and traditional wagashi. They’re amazing! and we’re always excited to share our favorites with you!
We Love Sharing and Being Part of a Global Community
We also love going to different countries. Shinya lived in the US for a few years and Maika has visited many countries across Asia and Europe over the years. We just love the diverse culture of the world.
Going to different countries and coming back to Japan, We are always amazed how different our country is. It’s almost like a shocking level. Japan is so UNIQUE. And we are always like “I want to share this to the world!”.
Our journeys always inspire us to share what we love about Japan with people around the world. It would be fascinating to create a global community through this Orita Chaten project.
